ADVENTURE HOLIDAYS OF A LIFETIME FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH AN ILLNESS OR DISABILITY

CRITERIA

METHOD OF SKIING - 3 TRACK (OUTRIGGER FLIP SKIS)

AGE - 11 to 14

CONDITION - SINGLE LEG AMPUTEE ABOVE OR BELOW KNEE

INJURY: DISABILITY WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ASSOCIATED ILLNESS

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THIS CHILD?

This child/young person will ski with 3 or 4-Track outrigger flip skis.

3-track is used when not wearing the prosthesis.

4-track is used when wearing the prosthesis. (Ski boot will fit on prosthesis)

This child may well be taught initially in conjunction with another child who will be using the 3 or 4-track method. These methods enable the skier to have either 3 or 4 points of contact with the snow.

They have to forget about vanity and street credibility as these flip skis get them to the top of the mountain with the rest of their new found mates.

This child must be able to comprehend instruction and to learn how to carve out their own turns in the snow by transferring their body weight onto the outrigger flip skis, long elbow crutches with small skis on the end and flip up metal cleats for walking. 

Hence the following 3-essential strengths required below

SUITABLE ONLY FOR

Strong upper body & shoulders (essential)

Strong in both arms (essential)

Strong grip in both hands (essential)

Ability to walk and stand for reasonably long periods of time, either with the use of prosthesis, sticks or elbow crutches

Ability to wear a ski boot without the skin breaking down

Wheelchair to be used only for extra long journeys. This child must be otherwise independent

Reasonable mature attitude to comprehend instruction enabling them to operate the equipment

A reasonably strong will to achieve would benefit this child

NOT SUITABLE FOR

Learning difficulties regarding safety on the mountain

Not suitable if frame or rolator is required for mobility

Foot should not be in-turned
